New engines, updated cab and new styling – the latest SAME Explorer and Dorado tractor ranges have received a serious makeover. With a power rating within the popular 80hp to 120hp band, SAME believes it is now well placed to capture a significant slice of a tractor market dominated by sales of mid-power machines.
Key to the design of the new models is the introduction of a new modular engine – the Tier 4i FarMotion which has been developed and built by SDF. Available in three and four cylinder builds, cylinder capacity is 962cc which makes for a 2.9 litre 3-cylinder and a 3.9 litre 4-cylinder. A new cylinder head design improves diesel combustion and, as a result, helps to fully exploit the power potential of these engines.
Use of turbocharging and intercooling along with high pressure (2000 bar) electronically managed common rail fuel injection, enables the 3-cylinder FarMotion engine to produce an impressive 97hp and the 4-cylinder, 109hp. Exhaust emissions, which meet the Tier 4i requirements, are controlled by a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and external exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).
The new Explorer is available in three versions: the Heavy Duty (HD) and the more compact Medium Duty (MD) and Lighter Duty (LD) versions. The three-model HD range – the 90.4, 105.4 and 115.4 which have power ratings of 88hp, 102hp and 109hp, are equipped with 4-cylinder FarMotion engines. Five models make up the MD range – a combination of 3- and 4-cylinder engines for a power band from 88hp to 109hp, and the 80hp to 100hp three-model LD range offers tractors from 75hp to 97hp, all of them using 3-cylinder engines.
In all, there are now 11 Explorer models each available with mechanical or powershift transmissions.
The new Dorado tractor line-up has the FarMotion engine in the 80, 90, 90.4 and 100.4 models with rated power of 75hp, 88hp, 88hp and 102hp (the 88hp is available with a 3- or 4-cylinder engine), and also in the Dorado Classic 80, 90 and 90.4 models.
For the operator there is a cab which now features more space, improved visibility and air circulation along with a better control layout. As with other recent introductions to the SAME tractor range, the new models have the Giugiaro design – external features which are both pleasing to the eye and entirely functional.
Production of the new tractors, which is due to commence in July, will be at SDF’s Traviglio plant in Italy.
