The first case of an emerging strain of bluetongue virus (BTV-3) has been confirmed in a single cow at a farm near Canterbury, following routine work by the Animal and Plant Health Agency.
Ruminant Health & Welfare (RH&W) is advising farmers to remain vigilant to the disease and follow legislation on restrictions on animal movement.
The identified animal has been culled and a 10km temporary control zone has been put in place to minimise the risk of transmission while further investigations are underway.
Legislation is now in place around movement of animals in and out of the controlled zone.
