Tractor of the Year – Open Field: John Deere 8RX 410

The eAutoPowr transmission is one of the headlines of the 8RX 410 from John Deere. It is a fully electric transmission, driven by the engine and using mechanical gears, said to offer improved shifting, reduced noise, and far lower maintenance requirements.

It has also enabled the intelligent distribution of engine power through the transmission, split between the front and rear axles as required, as well as facilitating the option of off-boarding up to 100kW of power to electrically controlled implements. One example of this is driving the axles of large slurry tankers, meaning the setup requires less ballast, leading to increased traction and reduced wheel slip.

Reduced soil damage is also facilitated by the four-track design of the 8RX.

Power comes from a Deere Power Tech six-cylinder engine, offering 410hp and maxing out at 458hp with Intelligent Power Management. High torque levels of 1,851Nm are available at 1,600rpm and the tractor can reach 40kph at 1,148rpm.

The rear lift can handle up to 12,124kg, while the front linkage system can lift up to 6,000kg. Two hydraulic systems are available, the base offering 227 litres per minute, with the option of a 321-litre system. Within the base package, John Deere has also integrated Power Beyond and Headland Management.

Given John Deere’s focus on precision farming technology, there is a wide range of systems available. Telematics is included in the base package, including the use of the Operations Centre, while the options list includes one-push AutoSetup of the tractor and implement; variable rate and section control; turn automation and machine sync amongst others.

Within the cab, the 4600 Command Centre enables the operator to adjust various functions, while the option of the CommandPRO includes eleven configurable buttons, as well as full transmission control.
