Following the latest industry fatality figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the nationwide Farm Safety Week, in the latest edition of Machinery Matters, Farm Contractor’s machinery editor Matthew Tilt spoke with two members of the agricultural industry about the importance of staying safe on the farm.
James Dalke, district commercial manager for BRP, took the time to talk about the latest study carried out by the University of Aberdeen and Can-Am, which explored why operators of ATVs do not wear helmets. Given that vehicular incidents make up a high proportion of fatalities in agriculture, he said that it was vital that operators wore a helmet and highlighted the importance of education and training when using utility vehicles.
Robert Gazely, from Ceres Rural, then came on air to talk about how operators can stay safe this harvest, and how tiredness and the ongoing risk of Covid-19 could significantly hamper efforts to get this season’s crop in the shed.
